Painting a steel front door is an excellent way to enhance your home's curb appeal while adding durability and protection. Follow this step-by-step guide to achieve a professional finish.
100% Acrylic Latex Paint: Provides flexibility, durability, and weather resistance.
Oil-Based Paint: Offers a strong, long-lasting finish but requires more drying time.
Rust-Resistant Primer: Essential to prevent corrosion and improve paint adhesion.
High-quality paint (acrylic latex or oil-based)
Rust-resistant primer
Sandpaper (120-220 grit)
Painter’s tape
Paintbrushes & foam roller
Screwdriver (to remove hardware)
Drop cloth or plastic sheet
Cleaning solution (mild soap and water)
If possible, remove the door from its hinges and place it on a flat surface. If leaving it in place, use painter’s tape and drop cloths to protect surrounding areas.
Wash the door with soap and water to remove dirt, grease, and grime. Lightly sand the surface using 120-220 grit sandpaper to help the paint adhere better.
Apply one coat of rust-resistant primer to prevent corrosion and improve paint durability. Allow it to dry completely before moving on to painting.
Use a foam roller for smooth surfaces and a brush for edges and detailed areas. Apply thin, even coats, allowing proper drying time between coats. Two coats are recommended for full coverage and a professional look.
Allow the paint to cure for at least 24 hours before handling. Reinstall the door and replace the hardware once fully dried.
